What we can learn from military values?

A special thanks to DMH Stallard LLP for supporting us.
Dear Readers:
A couple of weeks ago I was introduced to the Army’s Leadership Code which got me thinking: how is the Army so successful at instilling its values and behaviours into its forces? Setting aside the life-or-death stakes and zero tolerance for anyone who strays from those values, there must be lessons in the Army’s approach that we can learn from.
One thing is for sure…. Don’t be Jack!
This newsletter was inspired by an email I received (thank you, Simon!) in relation to the last newsletter about ‘Gratitude’. If you have any comments or thoughts on any of our newsletters, I’d love to hear from you (just reply to this email) - it may lead to inspiring the next theme!

Don’t Be Jack.
Joe was in the Army 16 years ago. He is now Partner at a regulatory compliance consultancy.
So, Joe has seen the army-way and the corporate-way of leading. I had so many questions(!) but managed to narrow it down to 5….
Prior to moving into compliance, Joe spent several years in the British Army as a soldier in the Royal Military Police and, as a fully trained soldier, he also served on operational tours in Bosnia, Kosovo and Afghanistan as well as arduous training exercises in Canada and Kenya.
He was then a complex case investigator in the public sector. Now Joe is Founding Partner at Enterprise Incubator & Consultancy where he provides support and advice to small and medium-sized FCA authorised enterprises.
Contact Joe on LinkedIn or check out the website for Enterprise Incubator & Consultancy LLP. Joe is also one of the YOO MUSE Mentorship & Wellbeing Champions - if you would like to be mentored by Joe, complete the form on the website and I will introduce you.
Why Leaders Eat Last.
In this in-depth talk, leadership expert Simon Sinek reveals the hidden dynamics that inspire leadership and trust.
The cost of leadership is self-interest.
In biological terms, leaders get the first pick of food and other spoils, but at a cost. When danger is present, the group expects the leader to mitigate all threats even at the expense of their personal wellbeing. Understanding this deep-seated expectation is the key difference between someone who is just an ‘authority’ versus a true ‘leader’.
Here’s a thought.
Which Army values and behaviours could you adopt to improve your management skills?

YOO MUSE Events
In June we partnered with ComplyCraft Consulting to present ‘Conversation - Coffee - Compliance’.
The morning was filled with lots of talk (and air conditioning - phew!) around:
☕ Non-Financial Misconduct (addressing questions, such as ‘do the rules really address the gap the FCA has identified?’),
☕ Client Categorisation & Marketing (including how the proposed changes could impact firms’ day to day marketing and promotional activities),
☕ Asset Management Regulatory Reforms (Will the reforms really be ‘lighter-touch’?)
The session was hosted by Katherine Norris with Sean Campbell, Kate Jones and Joe Denney delivering their thoughts and insights, and also answering some great questions from our guests.
We finished off by catching up with each other whilst feasting on some delicious breakfast goodies.
