10th December 2025 Employee Engagement

Are you witnessing a rise in quiet quitting within your workplace?

Dear Readers:

Engaged employees produce better business outcomes than other employees, regardless of industry, company size or nationality, and in good economic times and bad, according to Gallup.

Actively disengaged employees aren't just unhappy at work. They are resentful that their needs aren't being met and are acting out their unhappiness. Every day, these workers potentially undermine what their engaged co-workers accomplish.

So, what are the signs of employee engagement (and disengagement) and what can we do about it?

Why do we want our colleagues and teams to be engaged in the workplace?

If you’re engaging with other people, you’re happier at work.

Dr Alison Edgar MBE

Employee engagement is the foundation of organisational success, directly influencing everything from productivity and innovation to retention and overall team morale. The silent threat to this success is disengagement - a state where team members emotionally and psychologically withdraw from their roles, leading to lower output, increased errors, and a negative effect on the culture.

I was delighted to speak with Dr Alison Edgar MBE about this, and here is what she had to say:

Alison is a sought-after media contributor and recently became a boardroom advisor for a new business TV show, ‘Ready Set StartUP’ on Amazon Prime UK & US.

Alison was one of the few women to be recognised with an MBE on the Queen’s Birthday Honours list in 2020 for her services to entrepreneurship and business, and she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Education in 2024. With over a decade of experience as a business champion, she has mentored top industry figures. Alison has also played a pivotal role in advising the government on business legislation, contributing to the growth of the UK economy.

As a dyslexic author of two international best-selling books, Alison has mastered the balance of how to enhance readers’ personal and professional development. Her debut book was a WHSmith Top Ten Business Book and named one of the top business books written by a woman in 2019 by The Independent newspaper.

Are your team:

  • Siloing in their departments, resulting in a breakdown of communication?

  • Resisting change or change fatigued?

  • Missing deadlines or misunderstanding priorities?

  • Demotivated and downright unhappy?

  • Stuck in a “that’s how they’ve always done it” mindset?

All teams have the potential to excel they just need to know how. See Alison’s showreel.

What is employee engagement and how do we improve it?

Employee engagement is the emotional connection and commitment employees have to their work and organization — it goes beyond employee satisfaction. Improving employee engagement requires a research-backed strategy that equips leaders to create the conditions under which people and business performance thrive.

People want purpose and meaning from their work. They want to be known for what makes them unique. This is what drives employee engagement.

And they want relationships, particularly with a manager who can coach them to the next level. This is who drives employee engagement.

Engaged employees are more likely to:

  • take initiative and go beyond what’s expected of them

  • stay with their company longer

  • deliver better customer outcomes

  • collaborate effectively with others

  • show resilience under stress or change
